Oatmeal Typeface
Type and Lettermaking - Spring 2023
Oatmeal is a typeface that was created for “Type and Lettermaking” with Kelcey Gray in the Spring of 2023. These letterforms originated from letters I created physically with dry oatmeal. After scanning and vectorizing, I could refine the forms into a functional typeface. This project challenged me to explore translating organic forms with tangible textures into the visual language of type design. The resulting letterforms feel soft, comforting, and approachable. In addition to being a fully functioning typeface, Oatmeal was my focus for the 2023 “36 Days of Type” Instagram challenge. For this challenge, I created thematic posts showcasing a letter from the typeface each day. The graphic style developed for this challenge was inspired by vintage children’s illustrations featuring oatmeal.
